Playing in the United Soccer Association (a league made up of teams imported from foreign leagues) in 1967, the Gales actually consisted of players from Dutch side ADO Den Haag with home games played at Kezar Stadium.

Following the 1967 season, the USA merged with the National Professional Soccer League to form the North American Soccer League (NASL), creating a new team from scratch that would eventually be named the Oakland Clippers.
